Obituary of Bette Hack
Bette J. Hack, age 93, a long-time resident of Eugene, Oregon, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 17, 2013. Bette was the younger of two daughters of Martin and Myrtle Conley Hack. Her early childhood was spent in Wheeler, Oregon in a house built by her father. The family moved to Eugene when Bette was 7 years old. The house they bought near the University of Oregon was to become Bette’s home for most of the rest of her life. She attended Eugene’s old Uni High (Class of 1938), and received her BA and an MA in Business Administration from the University of Oregon. After college Bette moved to Seattle for several years. She returned to Eugene to live with for her mother after her father’s untimely death in 1952. From 1952 to 1958 she worked as secretary and assistant manager for Herb Cox at his company, Random Lengths. She then taught in the public school system at Silverton (1958-1962) and at Pleasant Hill (1962-1978). She also taught at Lane Community College for 9 years. During her 86 years as a resident of Eugene, she was engaged in numerous activities that benefited the community—including the rescue of many feral cats—and was an avid fan of the Oregon Ducks football team. In 1953 Bette joined The Obsidians, the outdoor enthusiast group, and was very active with researching, planning and leading many outings for 57 years. The group gave her great joy and introduced her to many life-long friends. She was pre-deceased by her beloved sister Doris M. Wood, and is survived by her niece, Kathy Madden, and her husband Ron; her niece, Bonnie Ward; her grand-nieces Christina Boykin and Heather Ward; and her great-grand nieces Sabrina and Kaitlyn Boykin. A private, grave-side ceremony and interment were held by the family on Friday, August 30th at Musgrove’s West Lawn Memorial Park. A celebration of Bette’s life will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, September 7th at The Obsidian Lodge which is located at the end of Spring Blvd (just past Essex), in Southeastern Eugene.
