Obituary of Imogene Sundquist
F. Imogene Sundquist was promoted to Glory on November 16, 2013 at age 93. An only child, she was born in November 1920 in Dallas, Oregon, to Lew and Gladys Ballantyne. Imogene was a real Eugene gal, attending Edison Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, Eugene High, and the U of O. In high school, she was a drum majorette in the school marching band and in 1935 she and a group of four other ladies tap danced for a Review at the McDonald Theatre. Imogene studied nursing at Good Samaritan School for Nursing in Portland, OR, where she met her future husband, Dr. Everett (“Sunny”) Lloyd Sundquist. When he left for WWII, two years after they were married, Imogene was pregnant with their first child. Sunny preceded her in death in 1988, after years of Imogene’s tireless and loving caregiving. She is survived by her three children: Jon Terry [Cindy] Sundquist of Bend, James [Karen] Sundquist of New Jersey, and, born on Imogene’s birthday, Nancy [Dave] Haverstock of Eugene; family friend Christine Sundquist of Oregon City; six grandchildren: Jamie Lillard, Jered Sundquist, Ben Danielson, Alexis Sundquist, Ty Hodson, Kali Pelham; and seven great-grandchildren. Granddaughter, Johanna Haverstock-Nieland preceded her in death in 2007;Imogene was a member of the historic First Baptist Church in downtown Eugene since 1949. She hosted a Bible study in her home for many years, served as a Red Cross volunteer in the ER at Sacred Heart Hospital, and was a member of the Junior League of Eugene. As a child in Dallas, OR, she became a life-long friend and supporter of Mark Hatfield, along with her husband, Sunny. She loved her dogs and Kitty Boy, her cat. Her apple pie was the pie in “Mom, God, and Apple Pie” and her unique chocolate angel-food cake was heavenly. And who could forget her homemade strawberry jam, divinity, and fudge? Her cooking, flower arranging, gracious home decorating, and gift of hospitality were legendary. She was a beautiful, elegant lady, right to the end, and an extraordinary example to each one of her family, to whom she devoted her life to serving. Her greatest legacy was that she raised her children in The Faith; that when they grew up, “none have departed from it.” We miss her so much, but know she is now dancing the waltz with her devoted husband, Sunny. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Home Instead and Gateway Gardens for the loving care each one of them provided Imogene these last years. Their help and support gave her the best quality of life possible.Burial arrangements were by Musgrove Family Mortuaries. Imogene was buried next to her husband at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene. The family is planning a memorial service and concert at 3:00 pm on April 16, 2014, at North Park Community Church, 3484 Harlow Rd, Eugene, OR. J. Carl Laney, Professor of Biblical Literature at Western Seminary, and long-time family friend, will speak.
