Obituary of Richard Hill
Dick Hill was born in Eckelson, North Dakota, the oldest child of Lyle Harrington and Anne Sortland Hill. He had a younger sister, Mary, and a younger brother, Loren He grew up in New Leipzig and New Salem -- two small towns in southwestern North Dakota. He secured higher education degrees from North Dakota State, Stanford, and the University of North Dakota. He and Dulcie Bell were married in 1956. They have four children: daughter, Leslie (Brent) Wells, sons, Loren (Jill) Hill, Ben (Lek) Hill, and Jim (Debra) Hill. They have ten grandchildren: Andrew (Jaime) Hock, Noah (Catherine) Hock, Jessica (Andrew) Roth, Jordan Hock (Arum Ranisavljevic), Erin Hill, Alex Hill, Sam Wells, Satchel Hill, Rain Hill, Pema Hill plus three great grandchildren, Alyse & Peyton Roth, and Milo Hock. Other survivors include Dick’s brother, Loren (Norma) Hill, many nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. Dick was preceded in death by his sister Mary (Mike) Kroll. As a youth, Dick enjoyed farm work and Boy Scouting. He was employed as a canoe guide in the Quetico region of Minnesota and Canada for seven summers and continued to enjoy camping and canoeing. He loved bird hunting and pike fishing with his Dad, his brother, and his sons. He was always an enthusiastic reader and bridge player. Dick taught mathematics, served as a junior high principal and assistant superintendent of schools in Grand Forks, ND, and director of a laboratory school at the University of Minnesota. He returned to Grand Forks as the school superintendent in a district of 12,000 students. The last seventeen years of his professional career were spent as a professor at the University of North Dakota where he was awarded a Chester Fritz “distinguished professor” honor. His specialty was school finance and he worked closely with the North Dakota Legislature over a dozen year period. Dulcie and Dick retired to Eugene in 1995 where he has been active in Osher Life Long Learning, his church, several bridge clubs, and in Food for Lane County as a volunteer cook. Time with family has been his greatest joy. Lifelong Methodists, the Hills are now members of the Coburg United Methodist Church. A celebration of life is scheduled for 3:00 on Tuesday, December 3rd at Coburg United Methodist Church.
