Obituary of Edward Elston

Edward Richard Elston “Ed” passed away on December 16th, 2013, surrounded by his family. Ed was born on September 20th, 1936 to Edward M and Athlene Elston in The Dalles, Oregon. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1954. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1961, following his service in the United States Navy where coincidently, he served on the USS Fulton, a submarine tender. Ed married Judith Maxine Fulton “Judy” on September 7th, 1958 in The Dalles, Oregon. Ed was a devoted husband to his wife Judy and a loving father and grandfather who taught his children and grandchildren what hard work, determination, and the love of family was all about.Ed loved spending time and traveling with his family, making many yearly ski trips to Central Oregon. Ed and his wife enjoyed travel (especially Maui) and visiting friends in Arkansas and Greensboro, NC. He loved the outdoors and hunting in The Dalles and Klamath Falls with his sons, grandsons, and his beloved Golden Retriever, “Ruff”. He looked forward to an annual pheasant-hunting trip to South Dakota with one of his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed fishing with his sons, grandsons, and friends on the McKenzie, Rogue, and Deschutes Rivers. He built three of his fishing boats, 2 McKenzie River Boats and one Rogue River sled, which his sons and grandsons now enjoy. He was an avid golfer and member of Shadow Hills Country Club, where he loved playing in and winning golf tournaments with his son and golf partners. He was also an instrument rated pilot at age 65 and loved flying his Bonanza aircraft.Ed loved learning about his Family History with his daughter and making several trips around Oregon with her, tracing his roots. He was a proud OSU Beaver fan and graduate and could always be heard rooting on his beloved Beavs!Ed worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. in Wood Products for 33 years: Eugene, Longview, WA, Coos Bay, OR, Hot Springs, AR, Tacoma, WA, Klamath Falls, OR and back to Eugene. He passed on his love of sawmilling and the lumber business with two of his sons working in the industry as well. Ed made every effort to attend all of his family’s events, in addition to a successful business career.He fought a valiant battle with brain cancer after his diagnosis in 2011. He wanted to make a difference in the disease and did through his family’s participation in the Annual Seattle Brain Cancer Walk (Team Warriors4Dad) and his daughter’s work at the Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment in Seattle, which she does to honor him and his wishes.He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy, his three sons Mark (Sonya) of Forest Grove; Jeff of Bellevue, WA; Scott (Shelly) of Portland, and daughter Maria Barrett (Mike) of Sammamish, WA. 9 grandchildren, 2 brothers, Dow of Herrin, Illinois and Mike Elston (Cindy) of Portland and several nieces and nephews.A graveside service was held on Saturday, December 21st in The Dalles at IOOF Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate his life is scheduled for Saturday, January 4th, 2014 in Eugene at Shadow Hills Country Club at 1pm.
