Obituary of Harriett Alice Reekie

REEKIE: It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Harriett Alice Reekie (née McCreary) on November 12, 2012 in the comfort of her residence at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home. Harriett was born on September 11, 1924 to Gordon and Esther McCreary in Treherne, Manitoba where she spent her childhood. After graduating from high school at the age of 16, she moved to Winnipeg to attend business school. She then worked for the Audit Department of the Manitoba Telephone System. While at a telephone company dance she met Jack Reekie and thus started their most wonderful life journey together. They were married on May 15,1948 and from then on, Mom's life revolved totally around her family. Dad was her best friend and they enjoyed a very full life. Twice they traveled to the Silver Broom in Scotland and Sweden, had a trip to England and most winters in Dad's retirement years were spent in Palm Springs, California. They had many golf games together as well as very many dances. After living in a few communities with Dad's work, Brandon became home in 1960. Mom was always busy with her many years of curling and golfing, sewing, baking and spending time in her yard looking after her garden, especially her tulips which brightened our house every springtime at 7 Basswood Bay. She loved people and enjoyed visits with her friends and neighbours and these last six years with the wonderful staff at Hillcrest. As the much-loved grandchildren came along, she was a very devoted follower of all their activities and made every effort to be in attendance whether it was a piano or dance recital, hockey or curling game or a J.R. Reid concert. Her cookie jar seemed bottomless. She was so very proud of her family. Mom is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Don) Campbell of Brandon and her son, Tom (Jean Valcourt) of Saskatoon; her 6 grandchildren, Lori (Ryan Dupuis), Robin, Cheryl, and (Heather Campbell, and David and Evan Reekie; her 3 great-grandchildren, Addison, Ella and Sadie. Also, her sister Edna Thomson of Winnipeg and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by the love of her life John William (Jack) Reekie (1999), her parents, her brother Herbert McCreary (1977) and her daughter-in-law Margo (2007). We all have wonderful memories of this gentle, cheerful woman who cared about us so deeply. She will be very missed. A private family service and interment will be held at Bethel Cemetery, Treherne in the spring.
