Obituary of Eben Otto Winter 10/10/1928 to 1/18/2014

How do you sum up one’s life in a few sentences or a paragraph? It’s almost impossible. Here is just a glimpse of the man that we called dad. Dad was born in South Dakota but was raised on a farm in Lacomb, Oregon. Later his family moved to Portland where he attended Milwaukie High School. After high school, he joined the Navy and did two stints. He then met his sweetheart Joan Elizabeth, he married her and loved her for the rest of his life. After the Navy dad was in the car business. He was a great “Car Man” and was highly respected in the industry and won many awards. His last job was general manager for Joe Romania Chevrolet until his retirement at age 62. Dad was famous for making up a nickname for almost everyone he came in contact with. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed meeting with his golf buddies three times a week for over 20 years. Besides golf, dad loved sports and Big Band Music and Jazz. His favorite thing to do was drive around in his Caddie with big band music playing loudly. Mom and dad loved to dance the swing and they were both excellent dancers. In their later years they loved to go on long drives exploring rural Oregon. Dad was devastated when his “Poopsie” (mom’s nickname) passed in 2010. Dad’s survivors are his daughter, Judy Lund of Eugene and son, Nick Winter of Portland, plus four grandchildren; Jordan, Rian, Emily and Megan. The icing on the cake was when dad became great grandpa to one Darby Winter (son of Rian); the sun was shining extra bright that day. We want to thank you, dad, for giving us a great life, for teaching us impeccable work ethics and for always being that big strong force in our lives where we always felt protected and safe. Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in late December and passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2014. His wishes were to be cremated. He requested no public memorial service. You can now rest in peace dear father. We like to think of you reunited with our beautiful mom, who you missed so terribly these past three years.
