Obituary of Carolyn Barrit
BARRIT: Carolyn Alice Barrit (née Makowski)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, daughter, sister, and friend Carolyn Alice Barrit on May 10, 2012 at the age of 57 years. After a courageous battle with cancer, Carolyn's final days were spent surrounded by family and friends at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She will be deeply missed by her family: her parents Steve and Sally Makowski, her children Shawn (Jane) Barrit and Michelle (Steve) Wahl, her brother Garry, her sister Connie (Sean and Ethan) Sodomsky, Hamish Barrit, her beloved pet Yorkies Buttons and Becky, her cats Bailey and Casey, and her horse Sugar.
Born in Gilbert Plains, and raised in Dauphin, Carolyn's love of the outdoors and her special bond with animals were present from an early age. She moved to Winnipeg as a young mother where she selflessly raised her two children, working as a nurse and as the owner-operator of two independent businesses. An ever-caring and nurturing soul, Carolyn adopted many stray animals and pets over the years. She was fiercely independent, and in 2007, this independence and her love of the outdoors drew her to spend time in several communities in southern Manitoba before settling in Brandon in 2011. This allowed her to spend more time riding horses with close friends and camping throughout the summers. With a touch of wanderlust and always looking for the next horizon, Carolyn's moves provided opportunities for another favourite pastime – renovating and redecorating until things were just right – something she even tried to do from her hospital bed. Carolyn loved to read, bake, shop, and keep in touch with friends and family on the phone. We will always cherish her kind heart, gift of gab, and the many memories we made together. Carolyn will be dearly missed.
The family wishes to thank the palliative care team at the Brandon Regional Health Centre for their care, kindness, and compassion. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
