Obituary of Roland Meyer

Roland Otto Meyer went home to be with the Lord on January 19th, 2014 due to heart and kidney failure. He was 79 years old. Roland was born December 23, 1934 in Heidenheim, Germany. Roland left Germany when he was 19 determined to make his fortune in the new world. Two years later after a courtship by letters he married Gertraude Margerete Burkhart, of Stuttgart, Germany, on March 2, 1957 in Chicago, IL. They were married for fifty-six years. Roland was a loving father and a devoted husband. He is survived by his wife Gertraude; his three sons, William and his wife Deborah, Edward and his wife Brenda, Thomas and his wife Heidi; his two adopted children, JoAnn and Reuben; fourteen grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Roland was passionate about his faith and was constantly looking for ways’ to show God’s love to others. He was happiest when Gertraude was at his side working on a project, going for a scenic drive or taking long meandering walks together. Roland served for five years in the United States Army in Korea and Italy. He was a highly skilled tool and die maker and gauge maker. He was an instructor for computer-controlled machining at Lane Community College for 25 years. During his years there he co-authored the textbook “Machine Tool Practices.” He was an accomplished food critic with gourmet taste. Roland was a Master craftsman in woodworking and enjoyed building from the ground up. He used those skills on many work-witness mission trips with his wife. He traveled to Peru, Ecuador, Israel, Guatemala, Africa, Russia, and Ukraine and throughout the United States and Europe. There will be a Celebration of Life held at the First Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 at 1:00pm. A reception will follow. Remembrances in his name can be made to the Eugene Mission. There will be a basket in the foyer. Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
