Obituary of Delia Anna Johnson

JOHNSON: Delia Anna Johnson, née Welch, a resident of Brandon for over 70 years, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at The Hamlets in Kamloops, BC. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her husband, Albert in 1997. Delia was born in 1914 in Milan, Quebec. While she was still a child, Delia's parents, Isaac Bradley Welch and Margaret Agnes (McLeod) Welch, relocated to the Virden area where they established their home at Glenleod in the river valley. Delia grew up in Virden as one of eight brothers and sisters. She met Albert in 1934, they were married in 1938 and soon afterwards they moved to Brandon, where they spent the rest of their lives together. Delia's early married life was devoted to raising her five children in the modest bungalow they bought in the west end of Brandon. As a dedicated homemaker, Delia's favorite pastime during these years was to develop and maintain a beautiful flower garden, which she tended as devotedly as she did her children. Delia worked at Albert's side as co-owner and partner when he first opened the Palladium Dance Hall in 1947, and later in 1961 when he established Johnson Sound Systems, a wholesale electronics and musical instrument retail business. When Albert passed away in 1997, Delia took over sole management of the business until her retirement on February 28, 2002. Delia remained self-sufficient and independent until, in February of this year, she had a stroke. She moved to British Columbia In March, and after a series of ailments which kept her in and out of hospitalized care, she moved into The Hamlets, an excellent personal care home in Kamloops, where she passed away quietly in her sleep. Delia is survived by her dear brother, Clinton (Doreen), and by her beloved five children: Leslie (Tracy), Brad (Linda), Steve (Debbie), Deirdre and Josephine (Dereck), nine grandchildren: Bradford, Garth, Hillary, Casey and Joseph; Jennifer, Raymond; Daphne, Leila; six great-grandchildren: Aldous; Jackson, Olivia; Jenna, Tony, Lily, and one great-great grandson: James. A Memorial Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Funeral Chapel, 332 – 8th Street, Brandon on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
