Obituary of David "George" Doole

DOOLE: David George Doole, known as George, passed away peacefully at the Valley View Care Home on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. George was born on April 5, 1922 to parents Robert and Elizabeth Doole at the home farm in Two Creeks, Manitoba George married Dorothy Hamilton, and together they had one son, Barry and two daughters, Tannis and Rhonda, four grandchildren; Kent, Sheldon, Joshua and Danielle and one great-granddaughter, Kazmira. George was predeceased by Tannis at the young age of six years. After 32 years, George and Dorothy divorced and two years later he married Jean Jennings. This gave him more children, Leslie (Ken) and Tom (Debbie), and grandchildren, Alissa, Braden, Cherie (Rob), Alana (Mike) and great grandchildren, Lucas and Laurel. George grew up in a typical farming area, where family and community were an important part of life. He was a councillor in Ward 5 of the R.M. of Wallace from 1974–1981 and like everything he did, this was a job he took great pride in. George loved the land and he loved animals. He was a true country boy at heart. His work ethics and carefree spirit were something many admired. While farming, George spent many hours preparing equipment, tagging cattle, riding horses and always had a dog tagging along beside him. As well as doing these things he also loved to share them as well. It gave him great pride when one of his kids or grandkids accomplished something he was teaching them, be it farming orientated, curling, shooting or just learning to drive. When his kids were young he spent many weekends travelling to visit his brothers and sister and families in Dropmore, Portage la Prairie, The Pas and Nanton, Alberta. During his farming days, and even after, George was a devoted Allis Chalmers man. Not only did he use them for years, he also sold after he retired from farming. George had many other interests, such as curling in the old Two Creeks rink, shooting, be it gophers or teaching his kids and grandkids by shooting out the bottom of a barrel. He enjoyed going to his grandsons hockey games and his granddaughters ice shows, playing cards with neighbors and friends, watching Hockey Night in Canada and wraslin' as he used to call it. George also took incredible pride when he told people about his grandson being in the Canadian Forces. And of course, we can't forget cheering on his favourite team, the Blue Jays! One joy of George's life was when he and Jean travelled to Toronto to a Jays game. Camping was another one of his loves when he was younger. There were many weekends spent around campfires with friends and family. Camping and mixed farming were his summer activities, and when winter rolled around, it was cattle and skidooing. He also loved to dance and was such a wonderful dancer! That's actually how he met Jean. They were both at a dance at the Army and Navy in Brandon. They loved to dance, sometimes as many as four times a week! When he wasn't burning up the dance floor, you could find him socializing and play cards with their many, many friends in Brandon and surrounding areas. George loved cards, and his kids and grandkids often talk about him playing crib. You could always tell when he had a good hand because he got that twinkle in his eye … good thing he didn't play poker! When he and Jean played dominos with friends, he got that same twinkle. George loved to travel and together with Jean they had many wonderful adventures. Their first was to Hawaii for their honeymoon, then followed Arizona, Texas, California as well as a tropical holiday to Jamaica. The top ranking trip for George was when they fulfilled one of his biggest dreams by travelling to England, Scotland, Wales and the highlight … Country Antrum, Ireland. This was his parent's homeland, as well as where his father was buried and George was able to visit his dad's gravesite for the first time. George is survived by wife Jean, son Barry and daughter Rhonda, grandchildren Kent, Sheldon, Joshua and Danielle and great granddaughter, Kazmira as well as many extended family members. He was predeceased by parents Robert & Elizabeth, daughter Tannis, brothers Bob, Bill, Jim and sister, Molly. A service to celebrate George's life will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Jamie Berry officiating.
