Obituary of Jack Cook

Jack Wilferd Cook, 90, of Springfield, Oregon passed away on February 7, 2014 of age-related causes. Jack was born July 8, 1923 to Wilferd and Christena Dickenson Cook in Richmond, CA. He moved with his family to the Springfield area in 1925, graduating from Springfield High School in 1941. After one year at the University of Oregon, he was drafted and served with distinction in the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army during WWII. He served in both the Pacific and European theaters, and was awarded a bronze star for his meritorious service in Italy in 1945. Jack married Margaret Anne Carr on July 13, 1947. Jack’s interests included hunting, U. of O. sports, church activities and family events. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, and also attended First Baptist Church in Eugene for many years. Jack was co-owner and operator of Cook’s Garden greenhouses from 1946-1974 and manager until 1980. He also worked for Decker’s Nursery from 1980-1994 and for Carquest until his retirement in 1999. Jack was predeceased by his parents, wife, infant daughter, Marilyn and a grandson. He is survived by a brother, Richard Cook (Joann), his seven children: Carolyn Knox (Steve), Peg Cook (Sue), Jan Speulda (Rich), John Cook (Katherine), Wayne Cook (Bonnie), Scott Cook (Barbara) Brian Cook, 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Eastside Baptist Church, 4045 Commercial Ave., Springfield. Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
