Obituary of "Micki" Florence Megan Green

GREEN: Florence Megan (Micki) Green passed away January 20, 2011 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, after suffering a short illness. Micki, as mom was known to all, was born in Miniota, Manitoba on February 10, 1934 the only child of Tom and Florence Stretton. She attended school in Miniota and Beulah, and at the tender age of seventeen, married John Edward (Ed) Green. Micki and Eddie made their home at Beulah, Cardale, Douglas and Sprucewoods. From their union, came ten children; Delaine (Russ) Manary of Winnipeg, Eddie (Sylvia) of Airdrie, Ralph (Debbie) of Calgary, Reece of Calgary, Darci (Larry) Semeschuk of Brandon/Souris, Corey of Brandon, Noah (Steve) Burns of Sherwood Park, Dusty Diment, Lance and Layne all of Brandon; twenty-six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. When Micki and Ed were living, working and hobby farming at Sprucewoods, Ed suffered from a severe Multiple Sclerosis attack and from that day forward was unable to work. Micki was forced into becoming the sole supporter for her husband and ten children, the youngest being only one year old at the time. Times were much different in 1967, and there was not the support available that there is today. Micki worked up to three jobs at a time, just to be able to put food on the table, clothe the children and look after Ed's medical expenses. She first worked at Burns meat packers in Brandon, from there she went on to work as a nurse's aide at Sunset Haven Nursing Home. She worked night shifts there, and during the day and evening shifts, she worked in Shilo at the General Strange Hall, where she supervised the swimming pool change rooms. It was there that she became like a second mom to many of Shilo's young women. To earn additional funds, mom worked as a personal caregiver to a Brandon family. Through it all she never failed her children and ensured that the family remained together. Once there were just five children left at home, mom relocated to Brandon and secured a job with the Royal Canadian Legion that would last twenty-five years, until her retirement at age sixty-five. Mom loved animals and always had a dog or two wherever she lived. They were her passion and she maintained, right up to her death, that she loved her dogs as much as her children, sometimes more! As a teenager, her first dog was a black lab named Nellie, whom she never forgot. There were many in between, but her last dog was also a black lab named Nellie, and she is now living with Reece in Calgary. Micki was predeceased by her mother, father and husband. At mom's request, her ashes will be buried with her beloved parents, in Beulah Cemetery later this year. The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Brandon Regional Health Centre for their care of mom over the two weeks that she was a patient there. A Celebration of Micki's Life was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Monday, January 24, 2011 with Lawrence McInnes officiating. Donations if individuals so desire, may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 – 17th Street E., Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6.
