Obituary of Robert Fahey

Robert Leo Fahey -- Born January 7, 1934-- Died January 31, 2014 Born to Gilbert Joseph Fahey and Adelina Brewer Fahey at Chelsea Navel Hospital, Chelsea, Massachusetts. Grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. Attended school at St. John’s Boys Home in Newton Highland, Massachusetts and Boston Trade. Came to Oregon in 1950 and attended Benson High School, after which he joined the Navy. During his course of duty as a corpsman, he served aboard the Pelican Mine Sweeper at the end of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1959.He married Helen “Pat” Armfield in 1958 in Portland, Oregon where they started their family. In 1965 they moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he lived until his death. Bob worked for 44 years for the railroads: SP&S, BN, and Amtrak as a conductor from 1956 until his retirement in 2000. Bob’s passion to provide all children the opportunity to reach their highest potential was fulfilled by coaching baseball, basketball, and football through the Eugene Spots Program, as a volunteer for a total of 22 years. When he was not working or coaching, he enjoyed playing golf and rooting for his all time favorite team, the Boston Red Sox. His later years were spent attending his grandchildren’s activities: basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and ballet, often coaching from the sidelines!He is survived by his wife Helen “Pat” Fahey, Eugene; his son Dr. Matthew Fahey and his wife Barbara, Portland; his daughter Sara Fahey Wilson and husband Don Slayton, Eugene; Granddaughter Stephanie Fahey, Seattle, Washington; his grandsons Beau Slayton, Gabriel Wilson, Alexander Wilson, and granddaughters Hayley Wilson and Maia Wilson, all of Eugene; Sister Dr. Adelene O’Brien, Portland; twenty-one nieces and nephews, and many, many great nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gilbert and William; nephew, Scott Fahey; and grandson, Shea Slayton.Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Coach Bob Fahey Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Emerald KIDSPORTS, 2190 Polk Street, Eugene, Oregon 97405, or the Greenhill Humane Society.A memorial mass will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1150 Maxwell Road, Eugene on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00. Rosary at 10:00. Inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon. Arrangements entrusted to West Lawn Memorial Funeral Home.
