Obituary of Eileen Ivy Barnes

BARNES: Eileen Ivy Barnes of Brandon passed away peacefully at her residence, Fairview Home, with family by her side, on Friday, June 18, 2010 at the age of 89 years. Mom was born on July 3, 1920 in Deloraine, MB. She was the oldest of five children born to Charles and Elizabeth Scott. Mom was a farm girl at heart and loved riding horses. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in a horse drawn van. In 1955, she returned to college to complete teachers training. Mom was a "women's libber" before it was popular. She taught in the Brandon School Division for 19 years and was known as a "strict but fair" teacher and she was respected by all. Mom was a member of the Naomi Rebekah Lodge #6, Baptist Women and Hobbs Manor Council. She enjoyed spending time with her family, creating crafts and curling (won Brandon Bonspiel in 1955). She received the Decoration of Chivalry award and was nominated for the Women of Distinction award. Mom is survived by son Russell (Connie) of Alberta, daughter Helen (Don) Scribner of Brandon, daughter-in-law Mary Lou Barnes of Kemnay; grandchildren Scott (Joan), Sean (Sandy), Andrea (Lee) Luders, Trina Carey, Tishia (Lyle) Wright, Carla Black, Bonnie (Kelly) Hyke and Joey; 16 great-grandchildren; brother Alec (Audrey) Scott of BC and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by husband Ewart, son Henry, sister Louise Robinson, brothers Alfred (killed in action) and Tom. A time of visitation will take place at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 3881 Park Avenue, on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Orton Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Active Pallbearers will be: Gerry Barnes, Glenn Scott, Wayne Scott, Lorne Robinson, Kelvin Robinson and Perry Robinson.
