Obituary of William "Gordon" Muirhead
MUIRHEAD: William Gordon, of Brandon. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our brother and uncle, Gordon on June 6th, 2010 at the age of 89 years. Gordon was born on the family farm near Ingelow, Manitoba on November 3, 1920 to Annie and Richard Muirhead. Gordon was the third oldest of five children. Gordon received his education at the Ingelow School. He often talked about taking a horse and buggy to school in the summer and then going by a horse-drawn cutter in the winter. Gordon lived at home, helping his father run the beef and grain farm. After the passing of his father, Gordon continued living at home with his mother, taking care of the farm. Growing up Gordon enjoyed curling in a straw rink that his father and brother helped build. Although Gordon did not have a family of his own, he enjoyed spoiling his many nieces and nephews. Trips to the farm where always spent following Gordon around on the tractor and then getting a special candy treat. Gordon never ventured too far from the farm, but he did enjoy his weekly trips to Brandon to eat out at Bonanza! He enjoyed looking after his cats and seemed to always have room for one more. Gordon lived on the family farm for 85 years. In the summer of 2005, a cyclone went through Gordon's farm site, uprooting trees and damaging his house. After the cyclone, Gordon was repairing his home and fell and broke his hip and wrist. Gordon recovered from the fall and moved into Riverheights Terrace in Brandon. He still made weekly visits out to the farm and often brought produce from his garden to share with the staff and residents at Riverheights Terrace. Gordon made many new friends at the Terrace and especially enjoyed his visits from the children of some of the staff members. He proudly displayed any arts and crafts these youngsters made for him. A proud moment for Gordon was being asked to cut the ribbon at the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Bank. He was able to prove he was one of their oldest customers by showing his pass book from in the 1920's! Gordon was a quiet and caring man who will be lovingly remembered by his brother Gerald Muirhead (Clarice) of Brandon, sister Vera Fee of Carberry and by many nieces, nephews and friends. Gordon was predeceased by his parents Annie and Richard Muirhead, brother Charlie Muirhead and sister Alleen Armstrong. Rev. Barb Jardine officiated the funeral service at Brockie Donovan Chapel in Brandon on Friday, June 11, 2010. Interment followed at the Carberry Plains Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Gordon to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Unit 3-824-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 5B7.
