Obituary of Onnell Lroy

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, February 17th at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Eugene for Onnell E. Lroy who died February 6, 2014. A reception will follow at the church. “Lroy” was born in Gorman, Texas on August 4, 1918 to William and Virginia Magers. The family moved to Abernathy, Texas where he attended school and graduated from Abernathy High School. Lroy, as everyone called him, graduated from business college. He served time in the Army and earned the title of Major and was discharged in 1946. Lroy worked in Eugene for several companies as an insurance adjuster and retired after 35 years as a claims manager for St. Paul Insurance Company. Lroy enjoyed gardening and took pride in his roses. He was an avid Duck fan and never missed watching a football game. In 1978 he met Louise Peebler while taking square dancing lessons and they married at Central Presbyterian Church in Eugene on April 5, 1980. He volunteered for the Friends of Eugene Public Library, the Salvation Army and the Lane County Senior Programs. After Lou retired in 1991 they moved to Lakeridge of Eugene where he became actively involved as “Bingo Caller,” serving on the LEHA Board and Residents Relations Committee. He also played golf, bridge, pinochle, billiards and bowled. He volunteered at the University Hospital and then at the Riverbend Hospital in Anesthesia and Transport Departments, pushing patients in wheelchairs. He loved volunteering for Peace Health and Sacred Heart Medical Center and made many friends. He touched many lives volunteering at the hospital. Lroy was predeceased in death by his first wife, Grace. Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Louise; son David C. Lroy and wife Judy of Beaverton; grandchildren Randy (Joe) Rogers of Beaverton, Ryan (Leslie) Lroy of Minnesota; two great-grandchildren; 4 step-children, Kathy (Stefan) Szabo of Vancouver, Patsi (Ken) McLaws of Springfield, Barbara McElwee of Springfield and David Peebler of Bellevue, WA; ten step-grandchildren and ten step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William of Nebraska and Merle of Amarillo, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peace Health Hospice or the organization of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Lane Memorial Funeral Home.
