Obituary of George William Proctor

PROCTOR: George William Proctor passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday 16 January 2010 at the age of 89. George was born in West Kildonan, Manitoba on March 10, 1920. He attended various schools in Winnipeg and was active in sports especially football and track. He was the Provincial Champion in the half mile in 1937. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1941 and served as a Flying Officer in Great Britain where he worked on the development of radar which was to be so important in the Allied victory. His war service led to a lifelong interest in radio and communications. Upon discharge, George returned to Winnipeg where he met Alexis Plant of Deloraine, Manitoba. They were married in March, 1946. George graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1951 with a BA (Hon) and soon after began his career as a history teacher. He taught at several schools in the Winnipeg School Division and went overseas with his family in 1960-1962 to teach at a Canadian Air Force Base in Germany. In 1966, George accepted the position of Head of the History Department at Beaver Brae Secondary School in Kenora, Ontario. Living in Keewatin, Ontario, George developed many interests and hobbies, all with zeal and passion - fishing, music, oil painting, CB radio, bridge, baseball, organic gardening, in the constant company of his beloved dogs. He served as a Keewatin Town Councilor 1984-1986. He also reaffirmed his relationship to Jesus Christ and was very active in St. James Anglican Church and in many lay ministries including the Kenora Jail and Pinecrest Nursing Home. His beloved wife Lex, passed away in 1989. With failing health and blindness caused by macular degeneration, George moved to Brandon, Manitoba in 2000 to be closer to his daughters. He lived in Brandon happily and peacefully, comforted by his abiding faith, first at River Heights Terrace and finally at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. George was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Lila (nee Kenny), his brother Ed, his sister Dorothy Curran and his wife Alexis. He leaves to celebrate his life, his sons, Jim (Mary Sweeney) and Brian (Sue), his daughters, Bev (Del Clark) and Jude (Adrian Kuryliw), 10 grandchildren, Theresa (Craig), Morgan, Brenda (Mark), Jeremy, Andrea, Erin (Vuth), Jodi, Leigh (Paul), Derek and Matt and five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Jack, Madeleine, Leighetta and Chloe. Also, his dear friends, Nancy and Ian MacDonell and Joe and Rita Boutette and his 'adopted' grandchildren, Joey, Kevin, Liz and Michael. George will be remembered by his nieces and nephews, his church family at St. James Keewatin and by his many friends, colleagues and students.
