Obituary of George Crompton
CROMPTON: It is with sadness that we announce the passing of George Crompton on January 19, 2010. He joins Lesley, his wife of 53 years, whom passed away July 28, 2003. They are sadly missed by their son Bill, daughter-in-law Rhonda, grand children, Christina, Angela, and Andrew, and great grand children Harley and Exilia.
George was born November 28, 1917 in New Haven, Sussex, England. The family moved to Canada in 1920 and he grew up on the family farm near Nesbitt, Manitoba. In June of 1940, George enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles; he served in Canada and Continental Europe during WWII. Upon being discharged from the service in 1945, George took up residence in Brandon where he met Lesley and they married in 1950.
George was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion #3, for many years as an executive member and Sgt-at-Arms. He volunteered many hours to serving veterans and families. He was awarded a Certificate of Merit and a Life Membership. George enjoyed the time he spent at the Legion engaged in playing darts and shuffleboard.
George was an active member of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Association, Brandon Branch. While serving as the President, he had the opportunity to meet and dine with Honorary Colonel-in-Chief HRH, Prince Charles. The RWR awarded George with a Life Membership for his services.
They family wishes to thank all the staff at Hillcrest Place who cared and comforted George in the last few years.
The Funeral Service to celebrate George's life will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, January 22, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. with Legion Padre Rev. Chris Arthur officiating. Interment will follow in the Veterans Section at the Brandon Cemetery.
