Obituary of Erik Humphrey

On April 1, 2014, the world lost and heaven gained an extraordinary man. Erik Clinton Humphrey loved big, loved deep, and loved well. His devotion to his wife, children, family and God constantly reflected his abiding love and faith. Born May 28, 1969, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Erik was the preciousson of Grant and Linda Humphrey. After courting the love of his life, Dana McMahon, for more than five years, they married on August 7, 1993. His son, Donovan was born in 2000. Erik was so proud of hisson's academic and sports accomplishments and found much joy in going to his basketball games. In 2007, Erik'sdaughter, Reagan was born. He loved taking her to the park and spent many hours drawing with her. After graduating from Elmira High School, he attended Lane Community College where he earned an associate's degree in criminal justice. Erik's thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Oregon where hereceived a bachelor's degree in sociology and political science. He then obtained a master's degree inconflict and dispute resolution. His career began as areserve officer for the Eugene Police Department in 1991. He was thenhired as a police officer andlater transitioned to community service officer. Erik was a tenderhearted man who yearned to help others and ensure they were well cared for. His compassionate disposition would lead to serving as an elected member of the Eugene Police Employees' Union for more than 13 years, faithfully serving as the president these last three years. As a talented writer, Erik researched and wrote a publication documenting the three tiers of collective bargaining. Although submitted to fulfill his master's thesis, it has since become an invaluable resource for the Union. Erikenjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience with others, so it was no surprise he was instinctively drawn into teaching. He taught criminal justice at Lane Community College these last few years. Erik is survived by his wife, Dana Humphrey; son, Donovan Humphrey; daughter, Reagan Humphrey; parents, Grant and Linda Humphrey; brother and sister-in-law, Nathan and Shelby Humphrey, and their two daughters. Erik was an active member of Eugene Faith Center. A celebration of hislife will be held on Friday, April 11, at 10:00 a.m., at Eugene Faith Center, W. 13th Avenue.
