Obituary of Otis Holland

Otis E. Holland of Springfield passed away April 8 at age 85. He was born to James and Bettie Holland in Fieldon, Texas. He was the youngest of ten children. Being victims of the Dust Bowl, they moved to Oregon when he was three, in a very similar fashion to the JoadnFamily in The Grapes of Wrath, traveling in a truck and car and sleeping by the side of the road. They settled on a farm at Crow and later moved to Eugene, where he graduated from Eugene High in 1947. He received his Business degree from the U of O, and later his CPA license. He practiced accounting in private and public sectors, with partnerships at both Yergen & Meyer and Isler & Company. He married Amy Davenport in 1950 and they had five children. He loved fishing and deer hunting with his brothers, and was happiest on the golf course or playing bridge. He belonged to the Eugene Country Club, JayCees, Elks, Masons, Scottish Rite and was a fifty-year member of the Downtown Lions Club where he received a Melvin Jones Fellowship. He is survived by his wife Amy, daughters Debbie Anderson and Bonnie Holland of Portland, Kim Holland-Turley, and Jill Thomson and husband Tom of Eugene, and son Derek and wife Cheryl of Portland; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and sister Lola Johnson and husband Larry of Veneta. A Celebration of Life will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park, 225 Danebo, Eugene, Monday, April 14 at 2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Lion's VisionGift.
