Obituary of Lloyd Dolby

Lloyd Jay Dolby was born to Loren and Leona (Zimmick) Dolby in Elgin, Illinois October 5, 1935. He died peacefully at the age of 78 on May 16, 2014 of complications from cancer.Lloyd attended the University of Illinois, where he was awarded his Bachelorof Science Degree in 1956. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in chemistry at theUniversity of California, Berkeley and was awarded a postdoctoral fellowshipat the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Lloyd taught organic chemistry atthe University of Oregon from 1960 until he retired in 1991. He took great pride in his twenty-three Ph.D. students, who all became successful in their fields. In 1980 Lloyd founded Organic Consultants Inc. where he continued to do pharmaceutical research until he sold the business in 2013.In 1956 Lloyd married Nancy Bonkoski. They later divorced. They had three daughters, Connie, Laura and Barbara. In 1983 Lloyd married Darlene Kline Earl.Lloyd had firm opinions about many things and was happy to share them with any who would listen. He had a quick wit, a wicked sense of humor and a kind heart. He was happiest when he was in his McKenzie River Driftboat rowing the local rivers or hunting with his Labrador Retriever. He taught many a fisherman and fisher-woman the fine points of fishing for trout, steelhead or salmon. Many learned to row the rivers under his tutelage. Lloyd is loved by many and will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and fishing pals.Lloyd is survived by his wife Darlene, his three daughters Constance Vasek (Bill), Laura Dolby (Stuart Nicholson), Barbara Dolby (Mark Hadley) and six grandchildren, Arthur Vasek, Marie Vasek, Reid Vasek, Fiona Nicholson, Henrietta Hadley and Theodora Hadley as well as his beloved black lab, Jasper.Remembrances may be made to Food for Lane County or Cascade Health Solutions Hospice Services.At Lloyd's request there will be no services.
