Obituary of Alice Lewis
Alice M. Lewis age 87 of Eugene, Oregon passed away on August 23, 2014. She was born on September 16, 1926 in Superior, Arizona to Robert & Alma (Johnson) Roe.Alice was a graduate of Eugene High School, Class of 1945. She married Graydon Andrew Lewis on October 25, 1945 in Eugene, Oregon., he passed away on July 1, 2014.She was a military wife and mother of four children. Alice and the family moved 13 times in 21 years living in Hawaii, Germany, Japan, Guam, & D.C. She travelled by airplane and boat with her children and experienced many adversities along the way, including surviving a Typhoons that blasted 185 mph winds through their home and a child having emergency surgery on board a famly transport ship.She was a member of the local League of Women Voters group since 1976. She chaired the group’s juvenile justice committee in the late seventies and early eighties and was appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to the Lane County Juvenile Justice Technical Advisory Committee, which she also chaired. Her enduring interest, however, was the League’s effort to educate voters and increase citizen participation in government. She served on the League Board for several years n the 1980’s as chair of the Voter Service Committee, including one year as vice president. More recently, she enjoyed attending the League’s third Thursday luncheons featuring speakers on current issues. Alice was a former member of Eastern Star and was active in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, while her children were growing up. She was also an accomplished Pianist.She is survived by two sons, Robert Graydon Lewis of Eugene, OR and William Bartlett Lewis of Washington and a daughter, Cindie Sedlock of Glendale, Arizona., a sister, Madeleine Wright of Orlando, FL and a brother, Louis Roe of Veneta, OR.She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Kathryn Marie in 1978.No services will be held per her request.In lieu of flowers, tax deductable contributions can be made to League of Women Voters of Lane County Education Fund, which helps support voter service activities.Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
