Obituary of Mike Matychuck
Mike passed away August 30, 2014 at RiverBend Hospital in Eugene of a massive stroke. His wife, Leona Edwena Newman Matychuck and step-son were with him. Mike was born November 22, 1939 to James Robert Matychuck and Ruth Troxel Matychuck in Eugene, Oregon. Mike graduated from South Eugene High School in 1958. After graduation he attended Santa Rosa Junior College in 1959.Mike worked for his father for many years in the family’s business, Bearing Supply Company; and continued to work in the industry until his retirement in 2003 from Applied Industrial Technology. Following retirement, Mike and Edwena moved to the Oregon coast near Yachats, where he reentered the work force to help his grandchildren with their education.Mike was a member of the Yachats Community Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Elks for many years; but joined the Yachats Lion Club where he was President for two years and worked on many club activities that benefitted the community. He loved traveling whether by car, plane or ship with his wife, grandchildren and/or friends; enjoyed playing cards with friends and playing golf. When it came to sports, Mike’s love of football began with refereeing Pop Warner football and high school football both in Oregon and California. In 1988, the move from California to Oregon allowed Mike to once again attend most every Oregon Duck’s Football games until his death. Mike had plans to attend the Saturday evening game prior to his untimely death.Mike is survived by Edwena, his wife of 34 years. Sister, Faye Ellen Samms (Doug). Three sons, David Charles O’Kelley (Patty), Jeffrey Lyle Matychuck, Guy Michael Matychuck (Lisa). Daughter, Stacey Fuller. Grandsons, Andrew O’Kelley, Russ Fuller; granddaughters, Taylor Matychuck, Kristen Fuller. Stepchildren, Michael O’Kelley and Jeffrey Carr, Sr. Step grandchildren, Cynthia O’Kelley, Jacob O’Kelley, Jeffrey Carr, Jr. and three great-grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by his parents.Mike will be missed by many for his gentle, caring heart; humble spirit; off-the-wall humor; stubbornness; and especially, his dedication to whatever he was doing.A Celebration of Life will be on Thursday, September 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Yachats Community Presbyterian Church (360 W 7th St. Yachats, OR). Rev. Erin A. Martin (Senior Minister at Wesley United Methodist Church, Eugene, OR) will be officiating.
