Dear Artuso Family - Sending you one of my favourite poems that I hope will offer you some comfort and peace: On Death By: Kahlil Gibran You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour. Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Although we never met Tony, there are some people whom you almost feel you know, through experiencing the love and affection that others feel for them. This was the case with Tony, “introduced” through our long friendship with Giovanna, to whom her father was clearly more than “just a parent,” but a loving, special presence in her life. He often came up in conversation, whether it was his fearlessless in store returns, or his gardening, or one of the innumerable ways in which he touched her life. He was a lucky man to have had such loving devotion from children and grandchildren, and to have lived a long, full life, but the void left by his absence will surely be painful in the coming days, weeks and months. We hope that the warm memories of a life well lived will sustain your family through this difficult time ,and provide you with as many laughs and smiles as tears.

February 22, 2011 Thank you Daddy. More than anything I just liked hanging out with you. When I was younger, I adored and followed Art around. As I matured into a young woman I realized you were a pretty interesting guy that could teach me so much. You taught me many practical things, like how to hang a picture so it will never fall off the wall, how to cut the grass and not make a mess, how to make a cement sidewalk that will never crack, how to build a shed that will last for decades, how to assemble anything without an instruction book, how to start a fire that will never die, and how to plant a tree that will grow tall and strong. As I grew from a young girl to a woman, I loved the independence and the self satisfaction from doing these things that any self respecting young man ought to know. Dad you taught me so much more. I watched you live your life with simplicity and joy. You were always happy, content and positive. Your passions and hobbies may have seemed simplistic but I now know they were really the things that matter most in life. You taught me to treat everyone with kindness and respect regardless of their background or status. You taught me not to be shy and to ask for what I need. You told me not to waste time worrying on what others may think. And if something was bothering me you just said, “Forget about it.” Patti and I spent many happy times around the table laughing with you and Mom and enjoying your funny nature. With pride we would often would repeat your stories to our friends. Even shopping with you made me giggle because everywhere we went people knew you by name. Walking into places like Costco or Home Depot you would be greeted with a big smile from an employee saying, “Hi Tony”. Much of my love of fine food and style began with you. When we were only children you taught us to appreciate the taste and smell of a good bottle of olive oil. Now I’m all grown up and I cherish our memories when I savour a great glass of wine or beautifully baked bread. Thank you Daddy for this and so much more. You will be in my heart forever. Our family will always be grateful for you. I miss you already and my heart aches to see you again. Daddy I’m that tree. And thanks to you and Mom I will stand tall and strong. Love Eternally, Giovanna

Dear Patti, Giovanna, Art and Mrs. Artuso: In grieving the loss of your beloved father (and husband), remember that we grieve with you. Such a beautiful man, a beautiful soul, can't help but affect all of us. Knowing him in person and through the many stories you had told, I believe he had the power of love shining through him each and every day and will live eternally in all of us.
