Obituary of Laurence Hubbard
HUBBARD, Laurence (Laurie) – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on September 17th, 2011 of Mr. Laurence (Laurie) Hubbard, aged 90, of The Village of Glendale Crossing, London, Ontario. Following his schooling, he joined the British Territorial Army in 1938 as a wireless operator and with the outbreak of war, was called up into the British Army. He served in France, Belgium and was wounded at Dunkirk prior to the evacuation. After his recuperation, he was transferred into the airborne Glider Division. On VE Day, he was flown to Norway in the army of occupation. He ended his military service in Palestine when he was demobilized in April of 1946. On his return to Great Britain, he worked as a sales representative for several companies ending with Birds Eye Frozen Foods. On emigrating to Canada in 1956, he was again employed with the same company, retiring in 1983. He was predeceased by his loving wife Myrtle in their 68th year together and their only daughter Lynda in 1998. He is survived by his son Michael (Elaine) of Moose Jaw, Sask. and their children Mark (Charlene) Hubbard and Jody (Terry) Horth; son-in-law Jack Yungblut (Maryanne) and Jack’s children: Dion (Kim) Yungblut, Peter (Shelly) Yungblut and Tammy Yungblut; two sisters: Pat (the late Bill) Scott, of England and Barbara (Derek) Gregory, of London; great grandchildren Kenady and Denon Hubbard, Jenna, Brayden and Jacob Horth, Zack and Colin Yungblut, and Laura, Carolyn and Adam Yungblut. He has several nieces and nephews but he was very attached to two nieces: Christine (Tom) Crook, of London and Irene (Norman) Bell of England. After retiring in 1983, he loved to garden and give freely of his time building the riding school that was so much a part of Lynda’s life. He enjoyed travelling with friends and relatives and entertaining guests in their home. Being a Veteran, he was a member of the Dunkirk Association until its demise due to lack of survivors. Always quick-witted, he was a joy to be around. His love of life, family and friends set an example for the rest of the family. His was a life well lived! A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Parkinson Society would be appreciated. Many thanks to the staff of Glanworth Wing at The Village of Glendale Crossing for their care.
