Obituary of Bob Sabin
Robert C. (Bob) Sabin was born July 28, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clarence and Esther Sabin and died peacefully in his sleep the morning of September 17, 2014.He moved to Oregon as a young man with his mother and brother Russ and lived with the Warner family in Myrtle Creek for his younger years. In his high school years he lived and worked at the Blue River Hotel before moving back to Eugene where his mother and brother lived. He graduated from Eugene High School in 1940 and enrolled at the University of Oregon where he was in ROTC and enlisted in the Army in 1942. After basic training and officer candidate school he shipped out to Italy where he served as a platoon leader in the 10th Mountain Division. He stayed in the reserves and also served in Korea as a platoon leader.He married Charlotte Calder in 1945 and continued his education with the GI Bill graduating with a degree in education. He started his work career as a teacher and half time Vice Principal in Roseburg and later became Vice Principal of the high school. He returned to school to earn his Master’s Degree and became the Superintendent of schools in Coburg. He took an administrative position in Salem and finished his Doctorate Degree in education before moving on to become the Personnel Director of the Lake Oswego School District. He retired as Personnel Director in 1980.Through the years Bob and Charlotte were active in the Presbyterian Church and Bob was very active in Kiwanis and Red Cross. During retirement they enjoyed their many friends, square dancing and traveled to Italy, Greece, Alaska and throughout the United States for 10th Mountain Division event and to visit family. In 1999 they moved to Eugene to be near to their grandchildren and other family and became active with Central Presbyterian church and the Emerald Empire Kiwanis Club. They enjoyed River Road Park District trips and activities and made many friends in their new neighborhood.Bob was well known for his interest in others and was always willing to make up a song and sing it for someone’s special occasion. Late in his life he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and spent the last three months of his life at Churchill Estates Memory Care. He celebrated sixty nine years of marriage with Charlotte and after his wife’s 90th birthday members of the family who attended her party had a chance to share time with him before his passing.He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, brother Russell in San Diego, daughter Jan and her husband John Ames of Alaska, son Douglas of Eugene and grandchildren, Worth M. (Ted) Briggs IV, Robert (Rob) Sabin and Rachel Sabin, three great grandchildren seven nieces and nephews.A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 18th at 1:00 PM at Central Presbyterian Church, 555 East 15th in Eugene.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Central Presbyterian Church memorial fund or charity of your choice in Bob’s name.Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary.
