I first met Matthew in December 2015 very briefly as he was visiting London that day. I only wish I'd gotten to know him a little better. From what I learned he was dedicated to the military and his family. My heart goes out to his wife Elysia, his older brother Christopher Whelan and other members of his family in their time to grieve their loss. Matt will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure to know Matt through my daughter Amanda and her husband Sam Murphy. Matt was a groomsman in their wedding party. When Amanda and Sam had their twins I remember how much love and help Matt and a Elysia gave to them. Matt was so good to the boys. I know Sam and Matt had a special bond from serving together in Afghanistan. Matt you left many good memories for a lot of people and you are gone way too young. Sending hugs to Elysia and sincere condolences to Matt’s brother Chris and family. Matt thank you for the smiles and laughs that I remember in the short time I knew you. May you have eternal peace and rest now.

My family and I have known Matt since he was a young boy in public school as he was a good friend to my Daughter Alicia. He had a lot of loss in his lifetime from loosing his mother and then his father. Watching him grow into a young man that his parents would be proud of was a truly beautiful site. Seeing him start cadets and then going straight into the military made me so proud of him. He always tried his hardest and I considered him to be apart of our family. He always made time to visit my daughters and us when he came to London for a visit. He always had a smile and was so happy to help in any way he could. The time we had with him was always welcomed and looked forward to. There is so many memories, pictures of him during his time in cadets, visits and even the excitement of his Wedding to Elysia! I’d never seen him happier then that day he married her! He found the one as he said to me! We will cherish our time with him always and he will always be in our hearts. He was a true friend, leader and we’ve all lost a great man! Chris and Elysia, know that he was loved by many and he will always be in your hearts, soul and memories. He is now at peace with his parents. Sending prayers, hugs and our condolences.

I was Matt’s grade four teacher. He was interested in military service even at that young age. Being from a military family myself, I remember our conversations about military life. Rest In Peace. Thank you for your service.
