Obituary of Richard Barnes

Richard passed away at home on November 1st after a long battle with cancer.He is survived by his wife of 53 years Hazel Barnes, his daughter Caroline Barnes and her husband Dan Charter, his grandson Kieran Charter and his sister Celia Peaty in Dorset, England. He is preceded in death by his son Peter Barnes who died in 1999.Richard was born in Wiltshire, England on Nov 23rd 1936 to Frank and Evelyn (kate) Barnes.In 1953 he joined the Royal Air Force as a radio fitter and while stationed in Lyneham, Wiltshire he serviced many Hercules transport aircraft and Lancaster bombers. He saw active service in Egypt in 1956 during the Suez Canal crisis when he was stationed in Cyprus.After completing military service he worked for the BBC as an engineer broadcasting the BBC World Service to many parts of the globe. He then decided to share his knowledge and experience with a new generation of student engineers and became a lecturer at Exeter College in Devon, England.He and Hazel came to live in Eugene in 2007 to be close to their daughter Caroline and her family.In retirement Richard maintained his interest in aircraft and loved to visit air shows and air museums. He took up lawn bowling. His other great passion was gardening.There will be a private cremation in Eugene. In accordance with his wishes his ashes will be laid to rest in Bradninch cemetery, Devon, England beside those of his son Peter.
