Wes Dunn posted a condolence
Dear Lauretta: I was saddened to read in Monday's London Free Press that Doug had passed away. Although from a different Faculty, my interest in the then Faculty of Physical Education gave me the privilege of enjoying a friendship with Doug whose contributions to Western's athletic program were nothing short of outstanding. Please permit me to extend to you, to Derek, Kelly, and Tim and to all other members of your families, my most profound and heartfelt sympathy Wes

Lauretta: When my son Mike chose to attend UWO to 'major' in basketball and take a 'minor' in Mechanical Engineering he told me it was because he thought Coach Doug Hayes was the best. And, it certainly turned out to be the best choice he could have made! In this difficult time, please be comforted by how much Doug taught every MUSTANG he coached about life, love and living. And, if there really is an afterlife, it is partly the many fond memories that all of us share of Doug's leadership, love and spirit. Pacem, Don Fedak

Jim Budge Whistler, BC posted a condolence
Dear Lauretta and Family: I had the pleasure of having Doug as a football coach in the early 1970's, and still remember his great sense of humour. He had the knack of making practices fun, while still commanding respect from all his players. We dreaded film sessions after bad games, knowing that Doug would be roasting us for our screw-ups, but his wit made it all good fun. Doug will be remembered as a wonderful guy by all his players. My condolences to you at this tough time. Jim

Muriel and Stan Hill posted a condolence
Lauretta and family Muriel and I were deeply saddened to learn of Doug's untimely death last Saturday. At Western, I knew Doug to be a quiet but strong faculty colleague, a basketball coach of renown and a solid teacher We know that he has had a tough time of it healthwise over the past several years and his passing was, perhaps, a release for him and for you, Lauretta, and the family. Please be assured that our thoughts and prayers are with you all in your time of sorrow. Stan

Larry and Linda Lahey posted a condolence
We were sad to read in the LFP that Doug had passed away. It doesn't seem that long ago that Doug and Lauretta and Linda and I attended the wedding of John and Linda Corrente. I always enjoyed talking basketball with Doug and fondly remember our trip to a basketball clinic at the U. of Detroit when Dick Vitale was the coach. Our thoughts are with the family. Stephen King posted a condolence
Lauretta, Derek, Kelly, and Tim, Doug's very positive impact on me as a person far exceeds anything to do with basketball. His calm exterior, wonderful sense of humour, willingness to forgive others, and sensitivity made him a role model to aspire to be like. A part of him lives on in those who new him and is no doubt being passed on to the children of those who benefited from their interactions with him.

Lauretta, my thougths and condolences to you and family members. It may have been 15 or more years since we worked together, but hold on to the good times. One that I remember is you and Doug in Greece having rented some motorized scooter and riding down some mountain for almost a whole day. I don't think anyone can match that kind of fun very easily ! Hi Lauretta Reading the condolences makes me of the memories that Doug sent via Email when you and him were teaching in Hungary. They demonstrated Doug's humour and ability to tell a good story. He was a very special person. Love Frank & Lorraine Mazza
