Obituary of Mary Jane Lloyd Zusy

Mary Jane Lloyd Zusy January 2, 1925-March 29, 2012 Mary Jane Zusy was born Mary Jane Lloyd, the first daughter of Windsor and Emily Lloyd, in Nampa, Idaho on January 2, 1925. Ruth, her sister, was born on August 25, 1928. She attended Nampa public schools, graduating from Nampa High School in 1942. She graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Health Education in 1948 – and then a B.A. in Nursing in 1949. Mary Jane taught obstetric nursing and practiced as an obstetric/nursery supervisor under a Fulbright teaching grant at the Admiral Bristol Hospital and Nursing School in Istanbul, Turkey between September '51 and August '53. She returned to the United States to enter Teacher's College, Columbia University, from which she received a Masters in Nursing Education in June 1954. Mary Jane married Fred J. Zusy of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in Johannesburg, South Africa in July 1954. He was at that time bureau chief of the Associated Press office in Istanbul – on assignment in Africa. They and their family lived in Istanbul and Rome before returning to the United States in November 1956. The family grew to seven children – and their family home was in Kensington, Maryland, suburban Washington, DC, until last January. After Fred's death in May 2010, Mary Jane moved to a senior living community in Chevy Chase, MD. In addition to her family responsibilities and pleasures, Mary Jane was active in the PTA, Campfire Girls, the Maryland Nurses Association, and the League of Women Voters Montgomery County. After her return to nursing, for some twelve years, she and Fred were once-a-week volunteers with Mobile Medical Care, Inc. She, Ellen Baily Raffensperger, and Lynn Marchesseault wrote "Quick Reference to Medical-Surgical Nursing" published by Lippincott in 1983 and "Clinical Nursing Handbook" in 1986. With Maryland Delegate Marilyn Goldwater, she wrote "Prescription for Nurses: Effective Political Action" published by C.V. Mosby Co. in 1990. She is survived by her children:, Jonathan of Durango, CO; Mark of Manhasset, NY; Susan of Silver Spring, MD; Catherine of Cambridge, MA; David of Kensington, MD; Jeanne-Marie of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; and nine grandchildren. Her daughter Anne Zusy Ortiz, of Ridgewood, NJ, predeceased her in June 2010. Memorial gifts may be sent to the League of Women Voters Montgomery County or Mobile Medical Care, Inc. There will be a memorial service and reception in Mary Jane's honor at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda, MD on Monday, April 2 at 11am.
