Obituary of Mildred Marie Jackson
JACKSON: Mildred Marie Jackson (July 11th, 1927-February 23rd, 2013).
It is with sadness we announce the passing of mom, grandma, and great grandma, Mildred Marie Jackson, on February 23rd, 2013. Mildred is survived by son Garth (Debbie), grandson Derek Jackson (Shannon Westbury, Dylen and Nick), great-granddaughter Summer, and great-grandson Maddox, granddaughter Kayla, and granddaughter Alissa. Mildred is also survived by sister-in-law Vivian Free and family of Winnipeg and sister-in-law, Mildred Hodgson of Morden.
Mildred was pre-deceased by husband Lloyd, son Gregory Lloyd, her mom Henrietta Hodgson, dad Albert Hodgson, sister Ruth (Bill Sadler), brother Ronald Hodgson (Linda), brother George Hodgson, brother Russell Hodgson, brothers-in-law, Merle, Stewart, and Bert Jackson, and sister-in-law, Bernice Jackson.
Mildred was born Mildred Marie Hodgson July 11th, 1927 on the family farm near Kaleida, MB. Mildred attended school at a one-room country school for most of her education. She managed to obtain her high school diploma. After graduation, she decided to go into teaching. Mildred started teaching at Hodgson near the Peguis Reserve and the Brandon Residential School. Mildred's parents decided to retire in Brandon and they purchased a house on Dennis Street. Mildred went to a New Year's Eve Party and met her future husband, Lloyd. Mildred and Lloyd were married in 1954.
David Garth was born in 1955, followed by Gregory Lloyd in 1958. Unfortunately, Gregory's life was cut short by a rare lung ailment in 1960 at the age of 18 months. Mom went on to a diversified career including selling Avon, a stint as a lab tech at the Brandon General, six years as a sales manager for Avon, two years of teaching at St. Augustine's, selling real-estate for Century 21, and finally as a Home Care worker.
Retirement was tough at times due to the strain of looking after a husband in failing health. It was times like this that mom displayed the strong character and determination that was always part of her life.
After the passing of husband Lloyd in 1993, Mildred was able to enjoy some freedom. Mildred made several trips to Mexico enjoying the warmth and sun of Acapulco.
Unfortunately, on July 11th, 2005 Mildred suffered a near fatal heart attack. Mildred survived due to the staff at BGH and St. Boniface Cardiac Intensive Care. Shortly after her recovery, the fifth floor of Fairview Home became her home. Mildred enjoyed Fairview due to a great staff that treated her with kindness and respect. Mildred became known as 'Millistar' to the staff of the fifth floor.
The family would like to thank all of the staff who have worked on the fifth floor, the staff and doctors at Brandon RHA over the years, and especially Dr. Mary Egan whose kindness and care cannot be measured. A service of remembrance to honour Mildred's life was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on February 28, 2013 with Rev. Jim Brown officiating. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mildred may be made to the CNIB, 354-10th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4G1 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Unit 3-824-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 5B7.
Mom, from all of the family- we will miss you.
