Obituary of Nicholas Chrest
CHREST: Nicholas Chrest of Brandon passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, April 29, 2013 at the age of 87 years. Born July 22, 1925, Nick was predeceased by his wife Dorene in 1989. He is survived by his sons Bill and Bob, daughter Dana (John) Breland and their children Adam and Ashlee, and numerous nieces and nephews. Nick was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Anglican Church. As an 18 year old, he joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in 1944 and trained to be a tank driver. On his return home, he met Dorene Gallaway and they were married in 1947. Nick was a member of the Brandon Lions Club for fifty plus years and he loved to play golf and bowl. Nick and Dorene raised their granddaughter, Dana, from the time she was a baby, so they had the daughter that they never expected to have. Nick was a partner in the Chrest Dry Cleaning business for thirty years. He later managed the Stylerite Department Store and he spent his last working years with the Medichair Company. When he lost his wife, Dorene, when she was only 62, Nick spent the balance of his life trying to cook eggs and fry bologna. When Dorene was diagnosed with ALS disease, Nick helped found the Muscular Dystrophy Chapter. The family would like to thank Dr. Davloor and the wonderful staff of Floor 2 at the Assiniboine Centre for Nick's care. A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 401 – 1st Street, on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Canon Joy Ruddock officiating. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nick may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 204-825 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1M5, with many thanks.
