Obituary of Raisa Kalata
It is with sadness we announce the death of Raisa Kalata (nee Werenicz) on September 18th, 2020.Raisa was born on November 23, 1922 in Ukraine, the third of ten children, born to a Ukrainian Orthodox priest and his wife Eva. Raisa was taken by the Germans during World War II and forced to work in the German war camps. After liberation by the allies in 1945 she spent three years in deportation camps in Germany until immigrating to Canada. She arrived in Halifax June 6,1948 and from there went to Shawinigan Falls to work as a domestic in the home of a cabinet minister in the Quebec Legislative Assembly. After fulfilling the immigration requirements she moved to Toronto.Raisa married Emilian Kalata and had three sons, Jerry, Walter and Roman. Working hard they established a good life for their sons. They lived in Toronto, Mississauga and finally Oakville. Together with their sons they built a cottage at Woodland beach. Time was spent hosting friends at their home and cottage. Raisa had a strong work ethic and would do anything for her family and friends. She was an accomplished seamstress and was multilingual speaking six languages (Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, German, French and English). Raisa is predeceased by her husband Emilian in 1994 and her son, Walter in 2013. She is survived by her sons Jerry (Robin) and Roman (Kim). Baba will be deeply missed by her nine grandchildren: Andre, Peter (Jessica), Adam (Leslie), Paul (Julie), Natalie (Adam), Michael, Christine (Scott), Katie (Jared) and Carrie. Also missed by her nine great-grandchildren: Mason, Charlotte, Wesley, Arabella, Avery, Aidan, Jack, Elsie , Brooklynn and 2 step great-grandchildren Dillan and Liam. Rest in peace Baba. We love you and will miss you. As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario the attendance at the funeral and cemetery is restricted to 30% capacity or less and a record of attendance must be maintained.Wearing of masks, or face coverings, by everyone is mandatory during their time in the funeral home or cemetery.Respecting the current situation and pandemic building restrictions, a Service will be held for invited guests only.Condolences can be offered through the online guestbook.
