Obituary of Anthony Norman Lecheminant

It is with great sadness that we announce that Tony passed away on September 2, 2020 at the age of 75. Tony is survived by his wife Gina, his children Carolyn (George) and Brad (Marie-Claude), his grandchildren: Daniel, Michael, Maya, James and Claire, and his brother Ian (Jean). Tony was born in Ottawa to Phyllis (née Cameron) and Arthur (Chem) LeCheminant. After a childhood of travelling across Canada and Europe living on Air Force bases, he graduated from Nepean High School followed by an undergraduate degree at Carleton, and completed his Ph.D. Geology degree at Princeton and the University of British Columbia. Summer student work for mineral exploration and geological mapping introduced him to field work which became his passion. He joined the Geological Survey of Canada as a research scientist, mapping vast tracts of the north, from Baker Lake to Victoria Island, publishing maps, reports and publications on the geology of Canada. He never met a rock he didn’t like. After retirement he returned to geological consulting, while continuing research with colleagues at the Survey.He loved travelling throughout Canada and around the world, often on rarely travelled paths which the family named “Tony trails”, collecting an eclectic array of rocks and minerals only exceeded by the book collection of an avid reader. In recent years Tony loved spending time with his grandchildren, using his photography skills to document family gatherings, sharing books and watching his grandsons play hockey. He was a loving father and grandfather who always encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue their interests. We thank the medical team at the I.C.U. and Surgery, General Campus, for their care and compassion. The family will have a private service at a later date.
