Obituary of Maria Fernandes

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing, in hospital, of our dear mother, Maria Bertha Esperanca Fernandes (nee Gomes), 92 years old of Ottawa, on June 14, 2020. She is survived by her loving daughter and son. She will be missed by her son-in-law, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters and numerous nephews and nieces - all of whom she adored. Bertha was born in Goa (a former Portuguese Colony), India. She was an extremely independent woman for her times and continued to travel back and forth from Canada to India into her 90s. In her younger days, she loved to sing and play the violin. Given the circumstances due to the pandemic, a private funeral will be held and a larger memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to the Ottawa Heart and Stroke Foundation. Heartfelt thanks go out to the nurses and doctors at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and Kemptville Hospital who cared for Bertha in her final months.
