Obituary of Gladys Winnifred Roosen
On May 16, 2013 Gladys Winnifred Roosen (nee Hurst) passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Sadly mourning her passing are her husband of 64 years, Ron, daughter Wendy (Bob), daughter Diane (Larry), grandchildren Landon and Morghan. Also mourning her passing is her extended family and many dear friends. Gladys was born and raised on the Hurst family farm near Treherne, Manitoba on April 20, 1926, the youngest of five siblings. She went to elementary school in a one-room school house in the district, and then moved to her Grandma Carter's in Treherne where she completed her grade twelve education and then taught school at Gray school. Gladys met Ron when he was electrifying the rural areas with Manitoba Hydro and they were married June 12, 1948 in Treherne. While living in Austin, Manitoba, Gladys and Ron had their daughters, Wendy and Diane. Gladys was involved in the Austin UCW, Ladies Curling Club, Eastern Star, and other community events. She loved the sport of curling and was very keen to be in a good close game, winning the Ladies Bonspiel one year in Austin. Raising their girls, canning and preserving, gardening and keeping their home, kept Gladys busy and she was very proud of her home and family. Gladys started working at KB Ceramics and Flowers when the family moved to Minnedosa in 1966, this found her in her element and let her use her creative talents that were handed down from her mother and auntie. She taught ceramic classes from the basement of her home for many years and was very proud of the pieces that were created by her students. Later on she worked at Robinson Store as a clerk until she retired. In 1987, Gladys and Ron moved to Brandon to enjoy retirement. She enjoyed many trips in their motor home with friends and family. One of her most cherished times was with her grandchildren on vacations, going fishing and on trips to the east and west of Canada. Most of her summers were spent at the cottage on Delta Beach with family and friends, creating many memories that are fondly remembered and will be cherished forever. For Gladys, her life was full of love for family, friends and home, and celebrating their accomplishments and lives, she enjoyed so much entertaining, playing cards or just sitting and visiting. She was very proud of and devoted to her home and family, she will be very sadly missed and forever in our thoughts and hearts. Miss you and Love you Lots. Gladys was predeceased by mother Jane, father Jack, brothers Lawrence and Wes, sisters Ellen and Estella.
