Obituary of Mary Chee Soon Lee (Obokata)

Mary C.S. Lee passed away at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, after a brief illness, on Wednesday, June 12th, 2013. She was 91 years old. She came to Canada from Singapore, the war bride of George Obokata, who was a member of the Canadian Army. She moved to New York City in the early ‘60s where she was employed by Lerner’s Clothing and the Food Emporium (Madison Avenue) until her passing. Her church family at The Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York was a very important part of her life. While in London, she worked at London Hobbies, taught leatherwork for the P.U.C., as well as in West Lorne and St. Marys. She was a former member of Metropolitan United Church. Mary was preceded in death in Singapore by her parents, eight brothers and one sister. She is survived by two sisters: Marjorie, in Singapore and Mollie, in New York City. She is lovingly remembered by her son Len Obokata, of London, and her grandchildren: Kristin, of Calgary, AB., Darcy (Heather), of Toronto, ON. and Jennifer, of London, ON. She is also survived in Canada, the United States, Singapore and England by several nieces and nephews. As was her wish, Mary has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be held for her in New York City on Thursday, July 11th, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at The Church of the Heavenly Rest, 2 East 90th Street. The family would like to thank the nursing and medical staff on 9 West, 10 West, 11 East and the Palliative Care Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. We would especially like to thank Caroline Cochran-Boyton and Reverend Thomas Synan who offered comfort to Mary while at Mount Sinai.
