Obituary of Gladys (nee Lewis) Kosynski

Passed away peacefully at her home in Lambeth on Wednesday, June 5th, 2013, surrounded by her loving family and looking back on a memorable 93 years. Gladys was born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Ireland, on December 3rd, 1920. She was one of four children of William John Lewis and Sarah Lewis (nee McCann Blakely). She came to Canada when she was 6 months old. She learned the value of hard work early, helping her father and siblings after her mother died when she was 16 years old. She met Archie Kosynski while working on her future sister-in-law’s, Victoria Platschorre’s tobacco farm. Archie and Gladys married in 1939 and had a wonderful 71-year marriage. Their early years were focused on their own farm in Union, which they built into a successful business and the foundation for a better life for their family. In later years after Gladys and Archie sold the farm, Gladys took up real estate with Canada Trust in St. Thomas. In retirement, they enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, and friends. Archie and Gladys were active curlers and golfed at St. Thomas Golf & Country Club in Union. Gladys will be deeply missed and remembered by all as a caring, resourceful woman with a keen sense for business. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Archie Kosynski. Devoted mother to Christine Jackson (Gordon) and Sharron Hutton (Robert), and a cherished grandmother to Jennifer Jackson (Michael Long), Sheree Stuart (James), Dr. Brett Hutton and Kris Hutton. She took great pleasure in recent years visiting her great-grandchildren Cameron and Sophie Stuart. Survived by her loving sister Marie Froud (nee Lewis) (Gordon), loving brother Glen Lewis (Rose), sister-in-law Georgette Kosynski and brother-in-law Rene Kosynski. She will be sadly missed as well by her nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her brother William John Lewis (Diana), brother-in-law Arthur Kosynski, sisters-in-law Victoria Platschorre (John) and Etta Kosynski. Gladys’ children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are so grateful to have had her as part of their lives. Gladys and her husband Archie have been the most wonderful role models as parents and taught the children that the most important thing in life is family. Gladys and Archie often said… “of all the things we did in our lives, we’re proudest of the kids.” How wonderful is that? At Gladys’ request, there will not be a visitation or funeral. A private memorial to celebrate Gladys’ life will be held at her home at a future date. Remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice. Gladys’ ashes will be inurned at Union Cemetery.
