DST-CIMS, BHU, Varanasi posted a condolence
CONDOLENCE MESSAGE A meeting to condole the sad demise of Prof. Sankatha Prasad Singh of the Western Ontario, Canada, was held today, the 1st April, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ground Floor Lecture Hall of the DST-Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences. Besides being a world renowned Mathematician, an exceptional teacher and widely recognized researcher, he was an extremely noble human being, who helped every one whenever required. This Centre is particularly indebted to him for his contributions in its establishment since its inception, and thereafter, in its subsequent developments. He was an Associate Member of the Centre. By the passing away of Prof. S.P. Singh on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the age of 76 years, we have lost a founder member, pathfinder, motivator and self-sacrificing well-wisher. He will be sorely missed by his family members and equally by all of us; indeed, due to his inspiring attitude and polite behaviour, he was close to the hearts of everyone who got a chance to meet him even once. We feel that his death has caused an irreparable loss to the world of mathematics in general and to the family members in particular. We humbly submit that we also stand with all his family members in their grief to provide support to them. For the peace of the departed soul, the members present in the hall observed two minutes silence and resolved that: “We, the members associated with the DST-Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, pray the almighty God to keep the departed soul in peace and provide all strength to the family members of Prof. Sankatha Prasad Singh to bear this great loss.” All the members and associate members of DST-Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences. To Suman, Indu and Manoj and your families, Ruby and I send our sincere condolences on the passing of our dear friend and colleague Dr. S.P. Singh. We were shocked to learn this sad news since it was only last summer that he visited us in St. John's. We have many good memories of him both professional, and personal. He came to Memorial University in 1967 and made St. John's home until retirement. Over the years, we maintained a very happy relationship and so we too now share a sense of loss as if he were a close family member. May God bless you all in this time of sorrow. I was extremely saddened to hear about Dr. Singh's passing, and my heart goes out to you. I was a student of Dr. Singh's in several classes in the 90s when I was getting my degree at Memorial. He was an excellent teacher, and always interested in the welfare of his students. He was always quick with a smile, and ready to help. I hope you receive some small comfort knowing that he greatly enriched many people's lives, and helped spread his own love of mathematics to others.

Dr Singh arrived in St Johns in 1967, one year after I did. So I knew him for a very long time. He was a well liked teacher, had many graduate students and published numerous research papers. Dear Auntie, Indu, Abhay, Manoj, Tanuja and kids: We are very saddened to know that Uncle has left us. I have very fond memories of our get togethers as kids. During the years you all lived in Newfoundland, Uncle attended many conferences; he would stop by our house in Montreal and spend time talking to all the kids, telling us stories of the latest place he had just come from as well as updating us on family life in Newfoundland (of course he would always bring a momento from the latest place he had been to). Our families always had amazing times together in Montreal during our summer holidays. What I remember the most of Uncle was his respectful nature towards everyone, whether a child, a teen, or adult. He always spoke with genuine gentleness, humility, and kindness. Our deepest condolences to you all. Aum Namah Shivay.

I was deeply shocked to hear about the sudden demise of Dr S.P. Singh with whom I had associated for more than 55 years. We used to meet quite often in our young age at conference meetings and it was a great pleasure to talk to him and walk with him to attend prominent lectures. While going to attend these talks with him it was very difficult for me to keep pace with his walking. Dr S. P. Singh was very knowledgable about prominent mathematicians and it was indeed a great pleasure for me to hear about them from him. Dr S.P. Singh was invited to deliver colloquium talks at the School of Mathematics and Statistics ,Carleton University twice and I am pleased to say that in his both talks the colloquium room was jam packed .There were tonnes of questions asked by the audience and I am pleased to say that the audience was very much pleased with his answers.I pleasantly remember the blackboard work done by him during his talks which were indeed very impressive.I will never forget the pleasant smile he used to give to us.He was indeed a thorough gentle man.

I knew Professor S.P.Singh a long time ago, maybe in the Seventies, when I was at the University of Calabria and he was an invited visitor there. Since then I have met him several times for scientific reasons, and have therefore come to know his deep and broad knowledge in the fields of nonlinear analysis, fixed point theory and approximation theory. However, the main reason - and best way - for me to remember him since now is his absolute patience and his permanent smile, expressing a deep goodness of his heart towards the whole world. May I express my Condolences to Suman and to all his family.
